Why does iMovie 10.0.9 squash my iPhone 6 photos

Dear All

I am creating a short movie containing video, still photos and music in iMovie10.0.9 but when I import photos some taken on my iPhone 6 they get 'squashed'. I have searched the internet for a fix with no success. Does anyone have the answer?
