iTunes 12.2 airplay is staggering

After updating to iTunes 12.2 (on OS X 10.10.4), airplay is staggering as soon as I have the iTunes application in the background (or the screen saver/black screen starts).

I'm streaming to an AppleTV and performance has been flawless prior to this update...

Keeping iTunes up front and avoiding the screen server allows normal playback, but this is somewhat limiting 😟

Has someone experienced a similar problem or even a solution?
