Safari Hack 7-3-15

Today Safari was hacked on my iPad and iPhone The screen locked with the message "http://www.safari-online-alert-com". This was followed by instructions to contact Support for Apple at 800-447-8361. When I called, a nice Indian gent had me remote my computer (Power Mac) to him and he would fix it for only 500 bux! I became suspicious and called my local Apple store to find they were aware of the problem but had no solution...the 800 no was a fake!

I am now rebuilding my computers from backup. Hope this works!

Try doing all of the following :

- close the app via the iPad's taskbar

- clear Safari's cache and history via Settings > Safari

- do a soft-reset : Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

If it you get the same problem when you re-open Safari then it may be a problem with your router : http://www.thesafemac.com/how-to-manage-a-hacked-wireless-router/

The key was your advice to clear Safari's cache and history in settings, rather than opening Safari to clear the history.. I turned the iPad off and back on. If I opened Safari again, the site would pop back up. Finally, after closing and opening, I just cleared the history in settings. Then I could use Safari. This site keeps the task bar from operating so that advice is moot.
