how can I get the same photo quality on the TV as I get on the iMac? Or will that be better on a new TV?

I have a 7 year old Samsung but viewing photos via apple TV on it is just a lousy quality. Am I missing some changes which will do a better job or will it only be better on a new TV or does it stay just the same?
