Error downloading purchases from iTunes

Every time I launch iTunes on Mac I get "you have 44 items waiting for download" and if I click download it ALWAYS brings up a window "There were problems downloading some purchased items." I dont really care if these are downloaded this has been popping up for a while now. I want to know if there's anyway to just delete these and get rid of the message.
