How do I fix my trash when I've put time-machine back-ups in it?

i deleted my time machine back ups through my finder. And then tried to empty the trash, but it won't delete anything.

So I've read some things that say I can go into terminal, but that's risky. And the other things I read were to erase the disk. But i'm unsure if "erase the disk" means erase my harddrive or erase the back-up/time machine drive.

Any help would be much appreciated.

So I need to erase my entire hard drive and not the back up drive? that's where I was confused. The discussion threads all said erase the drive or disk, but didn't specify if it was the hard drive for my entire computer or just the back-up drive. i can see how erasing the hard drive would fix the problem, but I'm not sure how erasing the back-up drive would, which is why i was getting confused.
