New Macbook Pro RAM does not work

I just purchased a set of 8GB (4x2) RAM for my 2010 Macbook. The computer only recognizes one of the two sticks. After a restart, the second stick will occasionally work. I've switched them two different ports but that did not help.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

If it worked fine before the new RAM purchase, then it is the fault of a new stick.


You can test the banks by re-installing the original factory RAM. If after the test you still have a problem then you will have to take it in:

What happens when you install the original RAM?


The Apple Hardware Test will test the RAM modules. Run it.

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.


A superior and more comprehensive RAM test is REMBER. If the AHT reports no problems, download it and run it overnight so that sufficient loops are executed:
