I recently purchased a Macbook Pro and was hoping to use my Garmin Forerunner watch with it. However, the Macbook does not seem to recognize the watch after I plug in the USB. Do I need to download an app?

iOS does not run on MacBook Pros. This website suggests the software for the Forerunner may run at least on Mac OS X 10.8, which is pretty good:
But since Apple changed the operating system a couple times since 10.8, there is no guarantee it will run.
Shows only one Garmin App has been tested with 10.10. If your machine is as new as of last fall (northern hemisphere), you'll have to see what you can do about finding if the software works with it from Garmin directly, as you won't be able to downgrade to Mac OS X 10.9.5 or earlier, or check if you can virtualize a version of Windows that will run with its software:
