Q: Macbook Pro won't boot past apple screen.

I have a macbook pro mid 2010 which I believe is running a version of OS X Mavericks. It starts up with the usual start up chime and boots up. Everything seemed normal. It is stuck on the screen with an apple and the spinning loading wheel. I tried to boot it up in recovery mode, safe mode and tried to reset the NVRAM. Nothing worked, it stays on the same screen no matter what buttons I press. What does this mean and what can I do?
