Volume only works for some tasks

About a month ago my volume quit working for most applications except when I had my headphones plugged in. The Apple Store guy reset my iPad and it fixed it. It was something more then just holding the home button and power button but I don't remember what he did. Now my husbands iPad is doing the same thing. Both are iPad Air iPads. Any ideas?
