Try to boot into safe mode and remove Norton.
Don't bother trying to re-install it. It's crap, as are pretty much all of the anti-virus and internet security apps for OS X. They're unnecessary and will do more harm than good.
Thanks how do I start in safe mode?
Click the link in my post for instructions on how to use safe mode.
Click on the link that he gave you in his reply -- the blue words "safe mode"
or Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
And if you need a second opinion re Norton -- don't re-install it.
Have followed the steps to get into safe mode but it doesn't seem to work!😕
It's possible that Norton has managed to hose the operating system to the point that you'll need to re-install.
Boot in recovery mode ( OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support ) and re-install OS X.
Hi Guys,
Tthanks for your advice, I contacted apple and got some support via chat support session. Went throw a number of resets the final one being to re-install OS X, however nothing changed still stuck in grey screen not really sure what else I can do!
Start up holding down the Option key and see what options it gives you.

Just tried this gave me the option of Macintosh HD or Recovery!
Does it still refuse to start up when you chose HardDrive?
Pete
Yep, take me back to a grey screen:(
Sounds very much like your HardDrive is failing. Can you start it up holding down Command and R keys and use Disk Utility to verify and repair the HD?
Pete
DI'd this yesterday and hard drive seemed fine
If your MBP is an early 2011 model or older, use the installation disks that came with it.
If it is newer, boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys. This should result in a display with a revolving globe. By following the directions you will be connected to the Apple servers and be able to install the ORIGINAL OSX that the MBP came with.
You will need a solid Internet connection.
Ciao.
