iTunes removed all movies and home videos, why?

For the second time now, iTunes shows me a pop-up right after syncing. The pop-up informed me that some content could not be synced, because it can't be played back by the iPhone. Unfortunately I also had my iPad plugged in, and got a 2nd pop-up for this device.

On both devices, all of the videos and home movies are gone.

After a reboot of the Mac the material in now being synced again, but this will take the better part of an hour.

Why does iTunes suddenly decide that some stuff can't be played back? And why is the content being removed? If it's on the device already, this might be an indication that it is in fact playable, so just leave it alone.

This time it was iTunes 12.2, the last time it happened it was probably 12.1 or 12.0.

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8, null
