How do you keep finder from snaping back to the last selected entry in list mode

This has driven me cray for years and I haven't found a solution for it. When I go to finder in list view and stop scrolling by selecting a file, when I scroll down further at what seems to be an arbitrary point, it snaps back to where that last selection was. Is this a Lion bug or is there a way to prevent this?
