Custom ringtones no longer listed in iTunes 12.2

I've had a few custom ringtones since it was first available in iTunes. When I updated to 12.2, suddenly my Tones tab was totally empty. The Tones folder is no longer in my iTunes Library folder either. And, of course, I synced my phone before I realized, so they're not on my phone either. Does anyone have any insight on where they went?

I’ve found a way to bring all my custom ringtones back to iTunes 12.2 and, ultimately, my iPhone. I’m on a Mac and can only speak for my experience, but hopefully this will work for you, too.

None of my 55 custom ringtones were appearing in the “Tones” tab of iTunes 12.2, so I looked into my iTunes Music folder (I keep mine on an external hard drive, but it would normally be found in the “Music” folder of the user Library.) I scrolled down through the names of artists, and found the folder called “Tones.” This “Tones” folder, amidst folders of artists’ names, is where I knew my custom .m4r ringtone files once were. Thankfully, they were still there.

Back in iTunes now, I added that folder to the library. But instead of appearing in “Tones,” the 55 ringtones appeared in the general Music Library. I also noticed that the ringtones were now being separated by artist and album.

Checking the iTunes Music folder was a revelation: the “Tones” folder had disappeared. And each of the 55 custom tones’ files had been moved to the artist and album folders for the song from which the tone was made. In other words, iTunes 12.2 is categorizing these ringtones by the attached artist and album data, not by file type.

But we can change artist and album data. So I did. And it worked. I’d bet it will for you, too.

So, assuming you’ve found the location of your ringtones and have already used “Add To Library” to get them back into iTunes 12.2 - - only to have them now in your music library - - you have to recreate the “Tones” folder.

Because I used a naming convention and a genre of “Ringtone” on all my ringtones, I was able to group them easily in iTunes. Hopefully you can, too, because you need to do some batch changes in iTunes to get rid of that pesky artist/album data.

  1. In your iTunes 12.2 music library, highlight all the ringtones at once, and open “Get Info”
  2. In this one info box, change all your ringtones’ Artist fields to “Tones” while assuring that all “Album Artist” or “Sort Artist” fields are blank.
  3. Assure that the “This album is a compilation…” field is not checked.
  4. Delete all album titles.

If you check your iTunes music folder, a “Tones” folder has now reappeared with a subfolder titled “Unknown Album.” Inside “Unknown Album” should be your ringtones.

5. Go back to iTunes 12.2 and delete all your ringtones from your Music Library BUT KEEP THE FILES.

Again, when you delete the files from iTunes, you will be asked if you want to delete or KEEP THE FILES. You want to KEEP THE FILES.

6. Go back to the “Tones” folder in your iTunes Music folder, into the “Unknown Album” subfolder, and select all your ringtones.

7. Move them from the “Unknown Album” subfolder into the “Tones” folder.

8. Delete the now empty “Unknown Album” subfolder.

9. Open iTunes 12.2’s Tones tab.

10. Highlight all your ringtones (the entire contents of your recreated “Tones” folder) and physically drag and drop them into iTunes 12.2’s Tones tab.

That’s it. All my ringtones reappeared in the Tones tab. And they all sync’d to my phone.

The new ringtones no longer have the artist or album info they once had, but that info has never been visible in the phone’s interface. So your phone’s naming convention hasn’t changed. I didn’t even have to reassign the tones in Sounds or Contacts.

As for that missing artist/album info, if I ever feel the need to, I can drop that stuff back into the ringtone’s comments field - - or some other field that won’t change the file’s folder structure.

Good luck.
