Issue getting Windows 8.1 on MBP Mid 2010

Hi,

This question is aimed at you Loner T.

I followed the instruction in one of your previous post to manually partition and instal Windows 8.1 on my Mid 2010 MBP.

Previous posts "How to get Windows 8.1 on Mid 2010 MBP?"

I have downloaded GDisk and attempted to create hybrid MBR in line with your previous set of instruction however my MBR has less partitions then in the previous post and I am concerned that may be affecting the behaviour.

I'm hopeful this terminal output will be a good starting point.

MacBook-Pro:~ BenDunlop$ sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

Here you are.

MacBook-Pro:~ BenDunlop$ sudo Fdisk //dev/disk0

Password:

Signature: 0xAA55

Starting Ending

#: id cyl hd sec - cyl hd sec [ start - size]

2: AF 25 127 15 - 1023 254 63 [ 409640 - 194756592] HFS+

*3: 07 1023 254 63 - 1023 254 63 [ 195430400 - 292966400] HPFS/QNX/AUX

4: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused

I'm also assuming that this process is still the only/easiest you know of to get Windows 8.1 running on this particular MBP?

I'm not sure about that, I haven't removed it.

I got this laptop as an old, unused, extra from work. I have upgraded the RAM and also replaced the HD with an SSD. When I replaced the HD I did a copy of the old HD with SuperDuper, then just plugged the new drive in and away it went. I haven't done anything else other than create a manual partition using disk utility with the hopes of installing Windows 8.1.

There is/should not be any user data on the laptop as I removed it all and there is nothing I need to save.

Hey mate,

Followed your link, I cannot access Recovery, or Internet Recovery no matter how many times I try. Someone else suggested downloading Yosemite again from the app stall, and running the installer. I did this however the installer gives me an error that it cannot unpack a certain package and cannot proceed with the installation. I then tried to quit the installer and start up the computer normally but now it will only start and run the installer. I am at a bit of a loss.

From other searching I found a suggestion to remove the new SSD, put the old HD back in, and do the back up onto the new SSD with a different program to SuperDuper. This may work but I don't really want to have to open up the case again if there is another solution? Although the fact that I can;t even get past the Yosemite installer know doesn't give me much confidence.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

1, Try Internet Recover using a Wired connection. Wireless is typically a problem.

2. Run SMC Reset and NVRAM Reset

3. If you power cycle and hold Alt/Option do you see OS X on the internal disk?

4. Which package is giving you an error?

5. Do you use Time Machine (in addition to SuperDuper)?

Ok, So I power cycled and restarted holding alt/option. This allowed to select my 'Mac SSD'. Once I selected that it prompted me to instal Yosemite which I agreed to. It then accessed the app store, did an instal and restarted normally.

After restarting I got the output below.

Disk: //dev/disk0 geometry: 30401/255/63 [488397168 sectors]

Signature: 0xAA55

Starting Ending

#: id cyl hd sec - cyl hd sec [ start - size]

------------------------------------------------------------------------

1: EE 1023 254 63 - 1023 254 63 [ 1 - 409639] <Unknown ID>

2: AF 1023 254 63 - 1023 254 63 [ 409640 - 193751224] HFS+

3: AB 1023 254 63 - 1023 254 63 [ 194160864 - 1269536] Darwin Boot

*4: 07 1023 254 63 - 1023 254 63 [ 195430400 - 292966400] HPFS/QNX/AUX

Does this look any better now for building the hybrid MBR?

I didn't end up doing items 1 or 2 from your previous post but can still do if necessary. Also I can't tell now which package in particular was giving the error, and no I had not used time machine with SuperDuper.
