Using Firefox (tried Safari and Chrome) and I keep getting pop up ads and redirects to other advertisement websites. Why and how can I fix it?

First try

Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac

Next:

Adwaremedic: Removes all known adware from your Mac

You can also get plug-ins/extension for the browsers that allow you to block Javascript and it ask you to enable it for sites you want Javascript.

I think for FireFox it is called NoScript
