iMac Late 2013 Yosemite doesn't connect to my Apple TV

Hi My iMac which is running Yosemite 10.10.4 when i mirror it to my apple tv turns to a black screen on the apple tv but still plays sound and i need it to be able to play Audio and Visual at the same time

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

have you tried to extend rather then mirror ?

most macs today has a higher resolution then most tv's can display and mirror would mean it's the same resolution
