iMessages received on Mac while iPhone is offline never appear on iPhone

When the iPhone is on the network again, the iMessages simply never appear, and I only discover them when I return to my computer, which of course causes me to miss a lot of messages! Short of logging out of Messages on the Mac whenever I go out, can anyone suggest a solution? Has anyone else had this problem? Thank you!
