MacBook cutting out during start up

my 4 year old MBP qont turn on

when I start it up the apple logo comes on and then under that is a loading bar

as of the computer is doing an update

it gets to about 1/3 through the loading bar then cuts out even when connected to power

ive tried the resetting the PRAM

but still wont turn on

any help appreciated!!
