Why is my macbook air heating up while charging

I bought my macbook in September 2014 and I am currently on vacation in Palestine. When plugging my mac in to charge it heats up and even starts to smell. It also makes a weird humming news and this is strange but it feels like static when I touch it. I know that the converter i have for the outlet is correct, so what else could be the problem?
