Changing the selection capture default format?

I have a MacBook Air (13 inch, Early 2014). OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10.4)

Processor 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I use the "Grab" tool (screen captures, capturing selections) frequently, but when I capture a SELECTION, it always saves it as a TIFF format file.

I want it to save as a jpg file.

I googled this, and only found solutions to make the SCREEN capture default format as jpg. (Using the terminal and typing in:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg

killall SystemUIServer

Is there a way to do this to selection captures?

Thanks

Grab does not provide user configurable image types, and as far as I know, you are limited to tiff output. The com.apple.screencapture facility is not for grab, but is configuration settings for the output of the screenshot keyboard shortcuts, and the OS X screencapture command in Terminal.

  1. Save picture of screen as file: shift-command-3
  2. Copy picture of screen to the clipboard: control-shift-command-3
  3. Save picture of selected area as file: shift-command-4, then click and drag around capture area. Release writes file.
  4. Copy picture of selected area to clipboard: control-shift-command-4

More information on the Terminal-based screencapture command can be found with the command: man screencapture.
