why have my maps disappeared in iPhoto and how do i get them back as I use places frequently

It seems there's been a breakdown in communications between iPhoto and the map servers lately for iPhoto and some earlier systems. It doesn't affect iPhoto 9.6.1 with 10.10.4.

Report the problem to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

It seems to be a general issue for every version of iPhoto using Google maps for this geolocalisation feature.

The service is broken for iPhoto 9.2.x under SnowLeopard and iPhoto 9.4.x under Lion, but it works for iPhoto 9.6.x (Mavericks) and newer
