Q: Photos "library" vs. iPhoto...what?

Veeeeeeeeery confused with new Photos "app" -- within "Photos" (on my iMac), I "copied/moved" some pictures currently showing in "My Photo Stream" into a folder, under the heading "iPhoto - Events - Misc" -- and they show there (within Photos).  However, when I open up iPhoto (in order to sort thru them, FLAG (no longer available within the "Photos" app), and assign them to specific events), none of these photos are in iPhoto.  I tried to highlight, drag & drop into the iPhoto app, I tried to move to appropriate folder (under iPhoto) within "Photos"...nothing seems to work to "migrate" these photos ONTO my iMac...  What am I doing incorrectly?  I have NO desire to have ALL of my photos accessible & "sync'd" across all of my devices...but I would like to be able to access them (as I USED to be able to do thru iPhoto...)  Either we're going backwards, or I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT FIND the manual/support/traininginfo on how to get there from here...

Remember we can not see you so accurate details are critical

within "Photos" (on my iMac), I "copied/moved" some pictures currently showing in "My Photo Stream" into a folder, under the heading "iPhoto - Events - Misc" -

What exactly did you do? There is no possible we to "move" photos around - And folders do not have Photos in them, flowers only have other folders or albums in them

The  iPhoto Events folders contains a group of albums that were created during the migration from iPhoto to Photos with each new album matching an event in iPhoto - these albums are exactly the same as albums in iPhotos so when you drag a photo to an album you are adding a way to view the photos not moving it nor are you duplication it - it is just one more view of the photo in your library (which you can also view in Photos and in All Photos and other albums if you have added it to them

none of these photos are in iPhoto.

That is correct - there is no connection between iPhoto and Photos - nothing done is one is reflected in the other - two totally different programs each with its own library and no connection of any sort to the other

To use those photos you use Photos - if you want them in iPhoto too you must export them from Photos and import into iPhoto - but it is best to choose either  iPhoto or Photos and use it rather than using both

Sorry, LN - you are entirely correct that my "nomenclature" was not specifically correct with my "folders" references...sorry, I've always kind of equated "Events" within iPhoto as a sort of "viewing-folder", binding together references from my complete iPhoto library into specifically-defined events.

Thank you for "interpreting" some of the defining information that I needed in order to understand this "migration" to Photos...in other words, there is no "true link" between Photos & iPhoto UNLESS I specifically designate that I wish to "subscribe" to the iCloud "link" available in the iPhotos app, correct?

My only additional question is:  now that I've "opened" Photos, and authorized migration of my iPhoto library...from how I understand what you've explained...I now have duplicate copies of all of my iPhoto library photos "in the cloud"/backedup in the Photos app (within iCloud) - correct?  If so, if I just delete my iPhoto tab/folder within Photos, will that eliminate "past" photos (from iPhoto) in the Photo/iCloud app?

Sorry to sound so "basic" but this information/procedure(s) are not easily identified in UserManuals or tutorials...(at least not that I've been able to locate -- if you've got useful links, feel free to forward them...I'm happy to do research myself, in order to understand the process more fully)

I've attached a screenshot that shows "39 albums/1 Folder" (from iPhoto) that I do NOT need to have remote

access to, backup of, etc. -- to me, it seems pointless to maintain multiple, data space-eating locations, if they're

all just duplicates of what's already in iPhoto...  Am I understanding this properly?

    Nope

    1 - iCloud in not a backup

2 - If you are using iCloud Photo library then any changes made in Photo (or any other device connected to your iCloud Photo Library ) including edits and deletions will be reflected in all devices

3 - deleting the iPhoto library is fine - BUT is will save very little space since iPhoto and Photos use hard links to reference the same originals and previous - Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support - so generally it is best to keep both libraries for a while to be positive that yu do not need or want the iPhoto library later

4 - the iPhoto Events folder and the albums in it do not use any space - they are just a way to view the photos from your iPhoto events - like the iPhoto library you can delete them if you want but it will save no space and if you ever want the organization is is irretrievably gone

5 - deleting the folder and the albums does not delete the photos - it just deletes the albums and as noted in 4 does not reduce space requirements at all

Albums and folder work exactly the same in Photos and iPhoto and are used for organization and take no additional space
