cannot move shapes around the page

cannot move shapes around the page

I am not able to move shapes around on the page. For example, if I select insert and shapes and select a rectangle, even if I select to make it editable, when I move it to another position on the paper and unclick the mouse, it goes right back to the position it was originally created in. If I go to insert and shapes and then click on line, a line will appear. When I go to make shape editable, that selection is unavailable for me. Is this some sort of a bug?

Imac Intel, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Welcome to Apple discussions.

I'm guessing that the reason you can't move the object around is because it's defined as Moves With Text. Open up the Wrap inspector (3rd icon from left in inspector), select your object, and click on Fixed On Page. Now you'll be able to move it wherever you want.

In the future, you can control this better by making sure Show Layout is turned on, then clicking in the margin area to make your cursor disappear before you insert an object. When you get your cursor out of the text layer, all inserted objects are automatically defined as Fixed On Page.

Not being able to move objects at will is an indication that the objects are in the text layer. Click once on any of the objects & then click on the wrap inspector (third icon from the left in the inspector palette) & click the button next to "fixed on page." How object are treated depends on where the cursor is when the object is inserted. If you see the cursor you're in the text layer. Clicking outside of the layout area enters the object layer & no cursor. At least Pages makes it easy to "move" an object from one layer to the other using the wrap inspector.
