information disapears after entering it into ical

Frequently iCal loses information I enter and all that is left is "New Event". This happens after I put in all the details and hit enter, and I see the event in iCal. Later when I go to look up the event all I get is "New Event" and none of the details such as the time, who or what etc. It's a serious problem as I am a free lancer and the details lost are jobs related.
