How do I set up a home web server?

I want to set up my iMac using Yosemite to be an in-house web server. This is primarily for webpage development.

I have seen the articles that describe how to do this and have followed them, to no avail. In particular, once apache is turned on, I cannot even get the primary test to work: http://<local host> which should pop up with "It Works". What I get is that the server is not recognized.

Now there may be a complication or two:

1. The sharing panel only lists the computer name -- xxxx. It does not provide an option for the shortcut.

2. I am on Comcast and have their Xfinity X gateway. It does not adequately reach my family room, so I have moved my Time Capsule to that room where I have a ethernet connection to which the TV is connected. I have set up another network to be broadcast from the Time Capsule named YYY. I can see both wireless wireless networks on any my devices. The iMac is on YYY and from the Time Capsule.

Any clues what is going on or what I am missing?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Thanks. But I still have issues. The server software indeed installed, and "http://localhost" successfully brings up the servers web page. However, I am unsuccessful in establishing my own site, even following the tutorial. The error message says I do not exist. I have a link to a site at which people are complaining about this issue while not using the server software as well. That's precisely my problem before installing the Server and remains so.
