I have a 5s, running ios 8.4 (but this happened on 8.3 also). About once a day, sometimes twice, my phone locks with a black screen. If I am listening to music, it continues to play and if I get a call the phone rings, but I cannot bring my screen back to life. To fix this, I have to do a hard reset.
Any ideas?

Assuming that this phone has never been jailbroken, try: Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. If that doesn't help, restore to factory settings:
My phone has never been jail broken (I bought a iphone because it works as is, and does not need to be jail broken). I have reset it several times.
Before I upgraded to 8.4 (yesterday), I did another backup, reset, full restore. I then upgraded to 8.4. It locked yesterday and today.
Restore as a new phone, without restoring the backup (apps and media aren't part of the backup and can be re-downloaded). If the phone still freezes, there is a hardware problem.
Note: if this phone wasn't purchased brand new, you don't know what was done to it by prior owners. Even if a previous jailbreak was "removed", there often is permanent damage to the firmware which can't be fixed by restoring.
I am the original owner.
Reseting and setting up as new is not a viable answer. Even if that does work, I need to be able to restore from my last backup to get my data back on my phone.
If this issue was on my Mac I would not set it up as a new mac and rebuild my data.
