Q: Photos is making multiple copies of referenced images...

I am trying to use Photos but it is making multiple copies of the most recent (yesterday's) import.  Any ideas?  I am on 10.10.4

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Where are you seeing the multiple copies?  In the Finder? In your library in the moments?

Only if you are seeing the same imported photo in several moments, you will have duplicates in the library.

And in the title you mention referenced images - please explain more about how this is involved in the multiple copy issue and how many is "multiple copies"?

And note that Referenced libraries in Photos are not really a good idea and have no advantage over managed libraries and introduce several issues and difficulties

It is showing 2 of the same image on that date in the Photos tab but not in the album and only one in the finder.

In large libraries, referenced files are a great idea as opposed to managed.  Managed files will clog your internal drive pretty fast if you are shooting raw.  I NEVER had a problem with Aperture duplicating views in that program.  I should have stayed with Aperture even though Apple has decided to discontinue future updates for the program.  For me Photos is just a very large pain.  The files in the finder are not duplicated, but the views showing in Photos show two of the same image.

Right - Referenced libraries work very well with Aperture - very poorly with iPhoto and pretty poorly with Photos - three different programs each with differences in how things are handled

And you certainly can stay with Aperture for some time it works just fine and will continue to do so until some future update (which you can choose not to install) breaks it

And maybe Photos will get better with referenced libraries in the future

I do not use them because of the many, many issues - in Photo 1.0 reports were that a bug  (or maybe a feature - no one actually knows) actually caused internal memory usage to be larger with a referenced library than with a managed library - maybe this was changed in 1.0.1 - and maybe not - I've seen no reports on it

Hopefully someone who does use them can help - my suggestion is not to us a referenced library or to go back  to Aperture

You can keep the entire managed library on an external drive. Nothing needs to take up space on your startup volume.

As LH stated, Photos doesn't play nice with referenced libraries, and if you enable iCloud Photo Library, it practically doesn't play at all with referenced libraries.

if it is a migrated Aperture library and your photos have benefited in Aperture, you may be seeing the original and the edited version in the Photos view.  The problem is, that Photos cannot recreate Aperture's edits, if you used brushed adjustments. In that case you may be seeing the original and the edited version side-by-side. Compare if you are seeing exact duplicates or one of the pair is showing edits.

As to the referenced library: In Aperture that works great.

If you browse this forum you will see, that Photos does not save space, when you are referencing the originals on an external drive.  Photos is creating auxiliary files in the library that need more space than the originals you relocated, at least that is what has been reported by some forum members who tried to use a referenced library with Photos.
