Macbook Pro Hard drive fail and need data recovery help

I have a mac book pro mid 2010 model. The hard drive crashed and it said unmountable and cannot be repaired. I replaced with a new hard drive and would like to get some of my data back from the failed hard drive. When I took this to the apple store, the genius technician ran some tests and it gave him a SOFTWARE WARNING error. He said I could try to obtain some of my data from the previous hard drive through an external USB case. I inserted the failed hard drive through an external USB case and tried to repair but it said repair failed. The top folder 250.x.x.x repaired and said was ok. The sub folder Macintosh HD was greyed out and failed the repair.

Any ideas what I could do to retrieve my data?

Thanks in advance for your help.
