Is the mac update.com-apple-menu a legitimate thing or a virus

i got a pop up on my imac that said a site I had visited today was infected with a virus & wanted me to go to a site to have my Mac scanned. I have Kaspersky internet security so why didn't it catch the virus if this is legitimate
