my ipad's screen is completely black and won't turn on ... any suggestions as to what the issue might be?

My wife and I bought an ipad back in 2013, and haven't had any issues with it. About a week ago I downloaded the "WatchESPN" app, and now today our ipad began shutting itself down. It's even to the point where when we plug it in we don't get a battery charging icon, I can't reset or restart either. I'm wondering if the app caused this malfunction, or if there is a bigger issue going on with our operating system.

Try attaching to the charger and a wall outlet, then do a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 10-30 seconds, then release the two buttons.

If that does not work and bring it up, there could be a hardware issue that needs to be seen by the techs at an Apple Store Genius Bar.

Already tried that. I've pretty much gone through the entire manual of suggestions ... figuring the Apple Store is my next stop this week.

That pretty much leaves the Genius Bar as your only viable option...sounds like you've done all a user can do.
