I just updated to the new Photos App on my desktop (10.10.3) and the program appears to be finished importing my photos from iPhoto. Yet, some of my photos are missing: specifically those from January 2015 onward. Unfortunately, I haven't been backing up with time machine (so I'm not blaming anyone here), I'm just disappointed. Is this a common problem, with a solution?

Most likely yu had two iPhoto libraries and migrated the older one - launch Photos while holding the option key down and see what libraries there are - if there is another one select it to open and migrate
