Settings/General/reset - erase all content and settings.
Tried that it showed the spinning clock for 4 hours. When I reset it nothing had changed
Linux on iPad?
You can reset the iPad to factory default settings under Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content And Settings
This will wipe out the iPad (all content will be deleted) and reset all settings to default without updating the iOS currently install on it.
Wait longer than 4 hours.
If you want to restore the same version of iOS that you now have, then you cannot do that if you Restore the device. Although you can erase all content and settings as instructed by Larry, that will not reinstall a fresh copy of iOS 7.0.4. So if you have a problem in iOS 7 I don't think it will work.
WOW. OK I'll bite. does it have to be hooked to the computer? it does not have enough power in the USB before the unit dies. Thank you
Not a computer, but you can connect it to an Apple USB wall adapter. But really, your iPad runs down in 4 hours? I charge mine about once a week.
No its an old one. I get about 4 hours out of it. 6 hours out of my new one running 6.1.3 and 24 hr out of my Iphone on 6.1.3. Thank you Sir I will try and check back. have a good evening.
Well its been 16 hrs still not complete. How else can I complete this task. I have not stopped it .

It sounds like you got something wrong with either hardware or corruption in iOS. The only option left is to upgrade it. And Erase All usually is pretty fast; taking that long means there's something really wrong. Was the iPad ever hacked or jailbroken?
Thank you for your help. I was hopeing to avoid that. So Erase all, Upgrade, Sell on Ebay. Go to Linux.
Thank you gentlemen for all your time.
