Video and sound stops playing when I choose airplay from macbook to Apple TV

Not sure how else to describe this but audio from iTunes will stop playing, Netflix from within Safari will stop video and sound and return a message saying something went wrong, etc etc. the second I choose airplay from the toolbar drop down menu.

I'm running Yosemite 10.10.4 on a 2012 MacBook air and Apple TV version 7.2

I feel like it's got to be something silly
