External Hard Drive Compatability

Hi There,

I'm shopping for a 1TB external hard drive. I saw one that says 'compatible with apple time machine', which led me to wonder if there are any compatibility issues between a normal external hard drive and using time machine. I'm assuming there wouldn't be, but just want to make sure.
Thanks,

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

Ok. So, talk to me like I'm a novice, because I really don't know a ton about computers.

So, if I want to use time machine that shouldn't be a problem and the software will configure the hard drive automatically? Or would it be better to buy a hard drive specifically designed for a mac? Or does that not matter?

I've already placed an order and need to figure out if I should cancel it.

Thanks
