I cannot edit my Word for Mac documents

I have written some work documents in Word for mac successfully. When I open some of these I am unable to edit them. All fields on the menu are greyed out. I cannot even close the document. It appears that the document has somehow been protected by I cannot even access Preferences to have a look.
