DHCP Timeout

There is definitely a problem with DHCP timeouts in Tiger 10.4.8.

I have verified this using two different MacBook Pro's, as well as an older iMac that has been updated to 10.4.8. On the same network, all Windows machines, as well as several Linux machines can get DHCP addresses just fine. All 10.4.8 macs will never get a DHCP address from this router.

The router used for DHCP is a Linksys WRT54GS with firmware version 1.50.9.

This is something that should be addressed in the next system update. At a minimum, there should be a way to adjust the timeout setting of the DHCP request.

I am a network engineer for a living so I am 100% sure there is nothing wrong with the setup of the MacBooks or the router.

Comments? Anybody have similar issues?

I think I am having the same problem. My wireless Internet worked perfectly, then all of the sudden my PowerBook G4 stopped accessing the Internet even though it says I am logged in to the network. It is driving me crazy!

As I write, I have been on hold with AppleCare for 25 minutes.

I think it is the latest OS X update.

All my other computers access the Internet just fine.

Add me to the list. All of a sudden I cannot get a DHCP address from my MacBook, just updated to 10.4.8. Although I did update my Linksys WRT54G router to the latest firmware.

I need to do some testing, but something is up...

My PC's can connect just fine...

Both my MacBook and my iMac, both updated to 10.4.8 cannot access internet.

It seems that they worked fine last week though. My iMac was updated when 10.4.8 first came out (it is the guinea pig) and it has been working flawlessly. I just updated my MacBook. I am starting to wonder if this is a linksys firmware update issue...

Yes, there is a problem with the wrt54GS and firmware version 1.50.9. It is discussed in detail in this:

http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wireless_Routers&messag e.id=10007

thread, along with the location for firmware 1.50.8 that will cure the problem. The same DHCP problem occurs with the WRT54G version 5 or 6 routers and 1.01.0 firmware, and is cured by reverting to 1.00.9

Yes, I have since figured it out to be the firmware and it has been aknowledged by Linksys.

My solution was to roll it back it 1.00.9. However I have for months now been troubled with the router locking up, losing connection and dumping my network. This firmware fiasco was the last straw for me and I went and bought a new DLink router (wbr-2310) they officially support Mac and Linux, unlike Linksys that do not officially support Mac. It was on sale at Best buy and it has several nice features that the linky doesnt have. No issues so far, but if any do crop up I will report back...

As much as I am glad that using different firmware revisions is helping some people, the fact that Windows and Linux machines work fine with the same router makes the "One of these things is not like the other" song play in my head.

If it were only Windows then perhaps I could give Linksys the wag of the finger, but Linux is too similar to OSX for me to be happy with that.

I know what you mean. I have been having intermittent connectivity issues for the past few months. I have been sure it was a Comcast problem, and indeed some of the issues were. But there have just been too many days were I have to unplug the router and reset it several times that even affects my Windows systems. So far today since running on the D-Link I have had zero outages. OF course time will tell, but I am not alone with my problems with Linksys routers. The forums are filled with people having connectivity and DHCP issues with LInksys routers. I have been using linksys products since about 1997 and would not recommend anything but Linksys up until about 3 years ago when I started using Netgear for some of the features that my Linksys did not have. I went back to Linksys earlier this year and it has been far from reliable. I don't think their products are as good as they used to be. It seems like the later revisions of the same product are very poor in reliability and quality.

Oh well, hopefully this D-Link comes through.

Add my to the list.

I own a Linksys WRT54GS 5.1 with the latest Firmware.
A few days ago my MBP couldnt connect to the internet nor the network at all.

Discussed my problem here:

http://www.apfeltalk.de/forum/netzwerkchaos-ich-verstehs-t58805.html

2 strange things:

Yesterday I went to University, had a perfect Wlan connection.
Today @ work I tried the ethernet, no sucsess. No Ip, can't get a new dhcp lease. Im switched with about 10 other pcs all work fine - my mbp doesn't work.

So it might not be a Linksys but a 10.4.8 Problem?

Hmmm... You know I have been having problems with my MacBook with more then my old Linksys. IT seems sometimes when it comes out of sleep it causes the router that its connected to to reset. It also loses wireless connections a lot. I never had this problem with 10.4.7. I really do think there are some networking bugs in OSX 10.4.8 that hopefully Apple addresses.

As for the linksys problem it has been acknowledged by Linksys, so it is for sure a problem with that series of routers.
