I do not wish to use the cloud and can't find a way of shutting off the request . I miss the old days when apple didn't "upgrade their operating systems to "improve" something that actually makes many things less user friendly . Removing one of main reasons I left the PC world .

Go to System Preferences>iCloud and sign out
You may have to then go to the Mail app, Messages, FaceTime and delete the icloud.com email account and use of the email address for Messages and FaceTime
