Can I delete desktop icons that come from successfully downloaded applications such as Java or Quicken?

After I successfully download a program there is an icon left on the desktop. Can it be deleted? Current examples on my desktop are Quicken 2015, Java for OS X, and Minecraft.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Icons are only an alias to open a file or app, so deleting them will not remove the app or file.
