Hi

I have a 4 yr old Imac 27" that has started rebooting itself with the screen showing various bands of colour.

Reloading the OS cures it for a few weeks then it comes back again, all hardware checks show no faults.

Now it will not boot at all, I hear the power come on, the drives spin up but the screen remains black.

any ideas?

thanks

Steve

Likely a hardware failure. Try restarting in the Recovery Partition by holding down Command + R on startup. Then launch Disk Utility and attempt to repair the HD. If you get errors after 2-3 attempts of repairing the HD then it likely has failed and needed to be replaced. If you cannot boot the computer still, it is time to take it in for repair at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Good luck.

The iMac is failing the pre-op startup test which is usually a hardware fault. Take it to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs run their diagnostics which are significantly better than those available to the users. That sounds like a failure on the logic board, perhaps the graphics module from the previous issues with the display image.
