Network Setup Question

I have Verizon FiOS. I have an older Verizon router in bridge mode and then connect it to my Apple Time Capsule to broadcast a wireless network. In this wireless network, I am also using 2 Apple Airport extremes as wireless extenders in bridge mode (so I can plug in several devices in different areas of my home to the airport extremes via ethernet calbe).

This setup has given me difficulties. Not sure if it's because my devices don't know which devices to connect to or what? It may also have to do with wireless bands being broadcast?

Anyways, I recently upgraded my FiOS to a 75/75 plan and with that came a free new Verizon Quantum Gateway router. I plan on setting that up this evening. Before I do, I wanted to see if it is possible to set it up as follows:

Verizon Quantum Router: Broadcast wifi network and a wired connection to my Apple iMac.

Apple Time Capsule: Connect to wifi network in bridge mode and use for time capsule only.

Apple Airport Extreme (1): Connect to wifi Network in bridge mode and use as a wireless extender (essentially a wireless "game adapter")

Apple Airport Extreme (2): Same as above

Is the above setup possible?

Is there a better way of doing that you would recommend?

I will want to access/write to the time capsule from an iMac and a MacBook via wireless.

Can I find the Time Capsule via the wireless network set up by the Verizon router?

If not, I'll need to broadcast a wireless network from the TimeCapsule.....correct?

If so, can it be the same wireless SSID and password, or does it have to be different?

Thank you.

Is the above setup possible?

Verizon Quantum Router: Broadcast wifi network and a wired connection to my Apple iMac

Yes

Apple Time Capsule: Connect to wifi network in bridge mode and use for time capsule only.

No, the AirPort Time Capsule must connect to the Verizon Quantum Router using a wired Ethernet cable connection.

Apple Airport Extreme (1): Connect to wifi Network in bridge mode and use as a wireless extender (essentially a wireless "game adapter")

No, the AirPort Extreme can only do this if it connects to a wireless signal that is being broadcast by another Apple router, like the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule can use the same SSID as the Verizon router......IF.....it will be located a room or two away from the Verizon device.

Apple Airport Extreme (2): Same as above

No, same reason as above.

So, I'll need to broadcast wifi from the Time Capsule and connect the airport extremes to the time capsule to extend the network as I do now

Correct, although the network would perform much better if the AirPort Extremes connect to the Time Capsule using wired Ethernet cable connections.

Next question, is there a way I can broadcast wifi from both the Verizon router and the time capsule and still have all connected devices be on the "same" network?

Yes, all routers use the same SSID and password. But, you would not want both the Verizon router and the Time Capsule broadcasting wireless......unless.....they are separated by at least a room or two.

In other words, you never want two routers both broadcasting the same SSID in close proximity to each other. That will create interference effects that will affect the performance of both routers.

If I could run an ethernet cable to where I am using the Airport Extremes....I wouldn't need the airport extremes. :-)

Ok. So it sounds like that for my ideal set-up then, I will need to purchase 2 wi-fi to ethernet adapters and a couple of 5 port ethernet switches to do the jobs that my airport extremes are doing.

For the Time Capsule, I will need to purchase a new external hard drive that can be in my home network via the iMac.

Seems a waste to have to buy all new stuff?

You could try that if you wish, but I would make sure that I understood the store's return policy before you buy......since the AirPort Extreme is already acting as a wireless to Ethernet adapter in your current setup.

It's possible that another wireless to Ethernet adapter might do a better job than the AirPort Extreme is doing now,, but you won't know if that will be the case until you buy and try it out in your home. The new wireless to Ethernet adapters may very well not do as good a job as the Extreme is doing now.

If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, you might want to take a look at Ethernet Over Powerline (EOP) Adapters so send the signal over the existing AC powerlines in your home. The theory with these devices is that you have already have the wiring in place.....you just need the adapters.

In practice though, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest. Again, it is a case of not knowing how well.....or even if....the EOP adapters will work until you try them out in your home. A number of users have found that these devices work far better than wireless, but the bottom line is always that you won't know if they will improve things in your home until you try them out in your home.

If you are interested in the best performance for your network....as you seem to be......It would be worth considering the investment to have an IT specialist come out and survey your home and offer several different proposals. That way you will know that things will work the way that you want.

Unless you really want to experiment and spend time setting up other products, having an IT guy or lady as a consultant will save you a lot of time and no doubt, money as well.

so I want to use an Actiontec (from Fios) as my base router/wifi source (for the main house) and use my Airport Extreme to provide wifi signal for garage/office (100 ft away from house). I know I need to hook the two together with an Ethernet cable and then use the Airport in bridge mode but a few questions:

1) which port on Actiontec router do I plug the Ethernet cable into and which port on Airport express gets the other end

2) anything else I need to change on Airport Express utility - (beyond putting it in bridge mode)?

3) if I wanted to add another Airport Express to my network, would it connect to the Actiontec or to the first Airport Express?

Best to start a new post for your question and include information about......

What version of the AirPort Extreme (you mentioned both an AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express) that you have?

What operating system you are using on the device that will be used to set up the AirPort Extreme (or, is it an AirPort Express)?

Whether you want the Actiontec and AirPort router to both use the same wireless network name, or whether you want separate networks for the home and garage?

If I see your post and another user has not already answered, I will reply.

QUICK SOLUTION:

I had this exact same problem: FiOS Quantum Gateway connected to my Airport Extreme suddenly stopped working. I purchased a brand new Airport Extreme, same thing. Spent a few hours ⚠ on the phone with Apple and FiOS tech support, no luck. Not a hardware problem because when I updated the AE it would work for about 10 seconds and then crash.

On a lark I hooked up a Cisco SGS-200-08 eight port switch ( $79) between the FiOS Gateway and the AE (I needed more hardwired ports anyway) Viola! Seems to have resolved whatever handshaking issues was going on between the FiOS Gateway and the AE. All working fine now. Here is a link to the Cisco unit:

Not Bob but easy question to answer.. it makes no difference..

In bridge which you should be using for the TC plugged into a modem router.. the WAN port is allocated to LAN.. so there is no WAN port as such.

I do recommend using LAN ports.. at least once you have bridged due to this problem.

FiOS Quantum Gateway connected to my Airport Extreme suddenly stopped working. I purchased a brand new Airport Extreme, same thing

The wan port on the TC is unreliable.. so if you have issues swap to the LAN port..

You do need to use WAN when running the setup .. that is helpful so the airport utility can figure out the network layout.. once complete setup you can swap to LAN port.

Thanks for the response. Everything I read seemed to say the WAN port but if it flips that to a LAN port and it doesn't matter I may try it that way. I was having some odd / occasional disconnects when using both the TC and the FIOS as WiFi (same SSID) just getting additional coverage and allow my Airport Express devices to also use as extenders. Will see if the LAN port helps with that.
