Q: Sony NEX 5n Photo RAW compatability

Hi All,

Only JPGs show up on import with the new Photo software. Is there something I'm missing or does Photo not support Sony's RAW format? It also won't import the JPGs, but it will recognize them. So that's not super great.

But you can Drag and Drop the files in. It's a mystery.

Thanks,

Dow

The RAW support is camera specific, Dow. There are many Sony RAW formats.

By this list the Sony Alpha NEX 5N is supported:    OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support

If you have been shooting RAW&JPEG pairs, the import panel will show you the pairs stacked. You cannot import the RAW files separately. If you want only to import RAW files, set the camera to shoot RAW only. Otherwise you will see the JPEGS in the Import panel, but both the RAW &JPEG will be imported. After importing you can switch to the RAW as original.

It looks like it should be supported - OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support

exactly how are you accessing your photos?

have you tried a card reader?

    Or Image Capture?

    Thanks for the replies!

I was able to get the RAW files over by mounting the camera, going directly to the files on the card, and dragging them onto the Photo icon one by one. In the "import" panel only the JPGs show up, and when I try to import them the error message says it may be an unsupported format. So clearly I have a (albeit time consuming) workaround. I can try image capture, and I have a card reader, both which indeed may work better. I was trying to save extra steps but given some fiddling it will work. I'm now going to try to edit the files, we'll see how that goes.

    Best,

But did you try to import the jpegs you are seeing?  That will/should import the RAW files as well.  Photos is treating them as an entity and will show only one of the pair.  You can switch between both files in the editor, but will always only see one at a time.

When I try to import the jpegs throws up an error that it doesn't recognize the file format. Now I understand what you're saying about the files being stacked (odd design choice but there you go...).

Are you importing directly from the camera or from the card?  Sometimes it helps to use a card reader instead.

You may want to send feedback to Apple that the RAW support is not working. Hopefully it will get fixed with the next MacOSX update.
