Dictionary no longer working with Pages or Preview over last 2 days. Only change was a couple of OS updates. How do I get the dictionary back?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

  1. First, a couple of questions: have you used any "cleaner" apps, like CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?
  2. How full is your hard drive?
  3. If you have used any "cleaner" apps, then you should first uninstall them, and see if that helps. It may not help to uninstall them, though. You may have to start over, erase your HD, and reinstall Yosemite from scratch, and then your apps from scratch. And not install the "cleaners".
  4. If your HD is too full, your Mac may not work well.
  5. Then I would try:
    1. Use Disk Utility to repair permissions, and see if the dictionary works.
    2. Boot into your recovery partition (restart and hold down ⌘ R), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive.
  6. If that doesn't work:
    1. make sure you have a good backup of your HD first
    2. reinstall Yosemite over your current installation using the combo updater, which is here: OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 Combo Update
