Grey Screen, Apple logo and loading bar during start up (it loads 10% - 25% then continues as normal

Hi Guys i'm having a small issue with my iMac 2009 model and don't know what the potential issue is. I run through the steps below:

- I power up the iMac and receive the chime.
- it then proceeds with a grey screen, which follows a apple logo and a loading bar.
- the bar loads 10 - 25% percent and then proceeds as normal to the desktop after 5 - 10 mins.

At first i didn't think this was an issue but, i have realised the start up time is increasing in length.

Is this a potential issue i can fix?
What do you advise?

How do i get a normal start up?

P.S. my work macs good after the start up, its just the initial stage that is making me nervous. Another potential issue is that it is getting hot very quickly. I have downloaded SMC fan control which does calm it down quite a bit, but its there anything else I can do as well.

Please help!!!

It might be a major issue. Before you do ANYTHING else backup the computer and test the back to see that it works. After you have verified you have a sound backup, please do the following:

Restart in the Recovery Partition by holding down Command + C when you hear the startup tone.

Open Disk Utility - and run Verfify Disk 2-3 times. Then run Repair Disk 2-3 times, if any errors appear this indicates you have a failing HD that needs to be replaced. If you don't get any errors then post an EtreCheck report of your computer and we can look for other obvious problems. You can get EtreCheck by clicking http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

I know its rookie question, but will i need an external hard drive to perform the backup

Yup!!

Operating any computer without a complete backup plan is at best risky and can be catastrophic. Eventually all computers and their hard drives die. Without any backup plan you are risking all of your valuable information, irreplaceable photos, music, movies, financial files, just to list a few.

Most experienced users on these forums not only have 1 backup they have multiple backups, why because backups can (and do) fail too.

Hi mate,

Soooo i have made the back up on a hard drive (requested yesterday - which took ages lol) i then did the checks on the disk utility menu as asked... i couldn't actually access the menu via the start up so while on my desktop i added disk utility to the search bar and accessed it through there.

This was successful with messages saying the hard rive is okay - see below:

I am about to go on the website provided to see if there is another reason to why this issue was occurring, do you have any idea why it might be happening?

Your system is a mess, you have 2 major issues. First , it appears you have been using a Torrent site. If you use the Torrent to download any software there is a pretty good chance you have infected your system with some type of malware. Please remember that using a torrent to download software that you did not pay for is considered theft and we really cannot help you.

The second major issue is you have antivirus software installed on your system, which is not only worthless (there are no viruses for OS X) but most antifvirus apps (Sophos included) tend to create more problems than they solve.

As mentioned there are no viruses for OS X however there is a small amount of malware. This malware can be easily avoided by using a little common sense.

The common sense:

NEVER use a torrent to download anything

If you get an ad, pop-up, e-mail or phone call advising your computer has been compromised this is a SCAM.

Keep OS X up-to-date.

My suggestion to you is to take your machine to an Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area and get it serviced. I suspect they will recommend doing a secure erase of your system and starting over. If you don't know of any in your area please click https://locate.apple.com/country

Good luck!
