sync shuffle to podcast position

I'm having trouble syncing my Shuffle to the last played position of a Podcast. For example, I'm listening to a multi hour podcast. First hour is on my iPhone. Then I want to go for a run, so I want to pick up the Podcast at the start of hour two. I'm finding that iTunes will not sync to the Shuffle based on last played position. It just starts over at the beginning of the Podcast. As there's no way to visually fast-forward to a precise point on the Shuffle, one must guess based on holding down fast forward or listen from the beginning.
