How to tranfer mkv files to Ipad?

I have VLC so I know i can play mkv files, but other than wifi upload through the app is there another way of transferring mkv files to my ipad?

is it possible to put the files on a sd card without having to like go through the effort of changing the file names to DCIM etc.. and then using the adapter put them on my ipad and then play them in VLC.

iPad, iOS 8.4

VLC is good enough and you'll have to use iTunes.

As an alternative solution, you can also transfer MKV files to iPad with WALTR. Here's a tutorial on how to do it: http://softorino.com/waltr/mkv-to-ipad-mac-windows

One of the things that makes WALTR stand out comparing to VLC, is can transfer MKV files directly into the default Videos app on the iPad or iPhone. Making the experience a bit more natural.
