My macbook air won't connect to my wifi, it appear in the list for available networks, however if i connect to a different network i.e. iPhone personal hotspot the wifi network appears in the list and i can connect as normal! any ideas

From your question, it sounds like you are not able to join your home Wi-Fi network unless you join another network first. To troubleshoot this situation, I would recommend working through the steps outlined in the attached article under OS X Lion and earlier, regardless of the operating system you are running.
