Using Terminal -Traceroute

Hi 😕

I tried to carry out a traceroute on www.answers.microsoft.com and got THIS result:

traceroute -T -p 80 www.answers.microsoft.com

Version 1.4a12+Darwin

Usage: traceroute [-adDeFInrSvx] [-A as_server] [-f first_ttl] [-g gateway] [-i iface]

[-M first_ttl] [-m max_ttl] [-p port] [-P proto] [-q nqueries] [-s src_addr]

[-t tos] [-w waittime] [-z pausemsecs] host [packetlen]

Can anyone explain this result please?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

The -T tag is unnecessary. Same with the -p tag.

By the way, it appears

7 microsoft-gw.customer.alter.net (204.148.29.74) 14.893 ms 14.865 ms 14.905 ms

8 xe-0-1-1-0.nda-96c-1b.ntwk.msn.net (204.152.140.175) 15.742 ms 16.507 ms 15.243 ms

10 ae0-0.nyc-96cbe-1b.ntwk.msn.net (207.46.38.113) 23.410 ms 19.486 ms 19.960 ms

12 191.234.85.32 (191.234.85.32) 24.959 ms 26.805 ms 25.015 ms

is what I get before I hit all stars.

The last 191 address is in Brazil according to http://www.geektools.com/

Now unless Microsoft is hosting in Brazil, it may have been hacked temporarily!

Wow! What an interesting comment, ' brody'! 😉

Thank you so much for checking.

A friend of mine checked earlier today and found this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/aijp4630rwdj2oz/Traceroute%20Photo.JPG?dl=0

Nobody I've asked has yet been able to explain what one can plainly see in this photograph! Have YOU any idea?

If somebody visits www.answers.microsoft.com - and 'signs in' ....

just *HOW* would they know if their computer had become part of a vast VPN? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network

*It's a serious question*. I am aware of what CAN happen. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/05/13/home_router_botnet/

Something to think about!

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Sharing lets you control Screen Sharing, and other ports. Screen Sharing is most akin to being part of a VPN. As long as it isn't checked you aren't hosting a VPN. Now mind you, if you use Peer2peer software all bets are off. That opens ports in a manner no other software can use. Only get software from known good sources such as the App Store.

Thank you so much for your further comments 'brody'

The only unusual activity in which I engage is chatting in Usenet groups. In so doing, I believe that I am allowing other servers to connect to my iMac - one example is http://www.eternal-september.org/

Am I right in thinking that just by subscribing to such a news-server, I'm also granting full permission for that server owner to 'visit' my computer?
