Laggy and Choppy Video playback

My Mid 2012 Macbook Pro has been experiencing performance issues recently considering video play back. Since last week, it has been playing videos that have been already pre downloaded earlier laggy and choppy. I have tried updating and clearing space on my hard drive but it still acted the same.
