Syncing music from my computer to my i-Phone

I have an I-Phone 5s and recently downloaded i tunes 12.2 update. The music and playlists that were on the phone are now largely missing. I tried syncing it to my mac air and all but the music would sync. Apparently, it is all in the cloud but I cannot get it to reside on the phone. I have plenty of storage space. How do I get it to reside on my phone?
